Website Checklist
YouTube
YouTube accounts MUST be created by the District Office so that they are under our Brand Account. Please request this through Craig Jerome or Samantha Davis.
In order to access the brand account once it’s created, you will need a google account. We will NOT use a google account that is tied to gmail. You must create a google account with your district email address. Instructions for creating a Google account the correct way and link to create an account
When you upload videos, please do not set them as “for Children only”. If you do, you will not be able to share your video or embed it.
All school Facebook accounts already exist. There is no need to create a new one. If you don’t have access to the existing one, please reach out to staff at your school or contact Samantha Davis.
Facebook pages are managed through a personal account. You may use your personal one or you can create one with your district email address, it’s up to you. This account is only for you and your access to the page, it is not meant to be shared. It is very easy to switch between two accounts, so it is advised to create a separate account for this purpose, however that is entirely up to you and how you want to manage the accounts.
We discourage the use of personal, position, and class Facebook pages. If you have good news to share, please coordinate this through your School’s page or post directly to your school’s page.
Instagram is owned by Facebook now and accounts are tied to pages (and personal accounts). You will need to provide a cell phone number to have an instagram account, there is no way around this.
We don’t use Instagram officially and there are no suggestions for doing so.
As a school, you have two choices for twitter. You may as a principal or teacher or class, have a Twitter account associated with your position/class. Under no circumstances will any accounts setup as personal/position/class accounts be regarded as “official” nor will any be linked from the school website (with the exception of the Principal). The account must clearly state that it is managed by the individual.
You may have a Twitter for the school. However, Twitter is difficult to manage access to, because it has only one login which has the ability to do anything with that account (including delete it) and we have definitely had problems with this. We have had:
- disgruntled employees delete School Twitter accounts
- prior school employees delete School Twitter accounts simply because they weren’t at that school any longer
- current employees hold a School Twitter account hostage by not releasing access to anyone else even when asked
It is VERY DIFFICULT to get Twitter handles these days, all the good ones are gone already. So we try to avoid losing them. Also, it is impossible to take over an account that someone has hijacked. If this happens, the account is most likely gone forever. Even if an account is reported to law enforcement, this only results in it being locked/blocked and the handle is never able to be used again.
Because of this, we ask that you use the existing school Twitter account that is already in place (if there is one), and do not change the password that is given to you (or the email). If an account needs to be created, please let us create it for you and give you access.
Twitter can be turned into a brand account much like Facebook, however this is a laborious process and we are still in the process of converting these accounts. When a Twitter account is turned into a brand account, it can then be managed by multiple people via their personal Twitter accounts (as you can imagine, this is the ideal situation for managing this type of thing). Please be patient with us as we transition to this setup.
If you are asked for access to a Twitter account that you setup for a school and have been managing for the last several years, please do not be offended. We are only trying to get the accounts all situated as brand accounts, so that it is easier to manage them and give out access in a way that makes sense for everyone.
Google Maps
DO NOT under any circumstances setup Google Maps location for your school (or any other map or search service). These can only be done once per physical location, and it’s very difficult for me to take it back over when someone has set it up. It has taken us YEARS to get only a small amount of the addresses related to our schools brought under our Google Search account. It is very important that we do this on the district end because this affects how the schools come up in searches, and what shows when people use mapping or search to find a location.
If you have one of the school locations setup with your google account, please contact Samantha Davis to get this transferred to the District account.
We are currently working on getting them all setup but it’s extremely time consuming and requires us to validate via phone or mail.
If you receive a card in the mail from Google with a code on it, please IMMEDIATELY EMAIL THE CODE to Samantha.Davis@stlucieschools.org and also pony the card to me as well. I only have two weeks from the date of the validation request to provide the mailed code, and in 95% of the cases where I’ve attempted doing this, I’ve either received the code too late or not at all. I have to wait two more weeks before trying again, and I can only attempt this TWICE in a six month period, so as you can imagine it’s a huge waste of time as well as very frustrating when we can’t get it done the first time.
