School Website Checklist

Keep main navigation sections to a minimum using clear and succinct titles

Avoid long drop down menus (no more than six options) and do not go more than 1 deep without switching to a mega menu

Avoid making viewers download a document for a small piece of information, copy it into the web page

Keep the font, text sizes and heading styles we have provided consistent throughout the website

Avoid underlining text, as it may be confused with a hyperlink

Avoid “Welcome to our Page” and reformat “Click Here” links for a more professional look and feel

Remove or update out of date information and broken links

Remove “under construction” pages or place them in private mode so that they are not visible.

Avoid creating unnecessary pages, instead utilize tabbed controls and other modern features

Avoid using graphics programs to design layouts for web pages as graphical text cannot be scanned with a screen reader, which makes it NON-ADA compliant nor can it be translated by a browser for non-English speaking visitors

Avoid using ALL CAPS, as it interferes with translation and spell checking (also it means yelling!)

Use the correct phone number format: (555) 555-5555

Be aware of and support WCAG 2.1 requirements https://webaim.org/standards/wcag/checklist

Be aware of and support district photography requirements regarding students

Use high resolution photography, and do not steal images off Google search

Be cautious using AI generated content, always check for accuracy and rewrite to give a natural voice

Make sure the title of your page accurately reflects the name of your school. Be sure to use the full name of the school.

Make sure the logo area has your school logo, not Kids at Hope or other logos. This area is your chance to establish a recognizable logo..use it to establish a personal connection to your visitors.

Make sure your cover image is up to date. The best thing to have here is pictures of students (with proper permissions) or a stock photo of students.  This is not an area for advertising the latest event, etc.  It should not change.  This is your brand and should be recognizable. 

Make sure the information under “About” is up to date (address, phone number, etc.) Please include ALL information in this area.
